Ways of Preventing Fleas in Pets
Most people love to keep pets in their homes and they are a good companion apart from that at times they can be affected by pests. The season and the place that one lives in are factors upon which the pests that affect the pets depend on. Some of the pests that will affect the pets are fleas which actually can be a big problem. Fleas can be a concern all year long in warmer climates. They are usually a concern for the pets and the family healthy. A resting time the pests can give someone together with their pets in the colder climates but it does not mean that they will not be back. Actually during the warmer season they will be back since they will always look for their next home during such times.
Fleas cause a lot of health concerns for the pets which include; flea allergy dermatitis, anemia and many more. In pets such as dogs and cats flea allergy dermatitis is a very common disease which is associated with flea bites. In the pets the skin disease causes a lot of itching and scratching which in turn leads to hair loss. Anemia on the other hand is also associated with flea bites. Weariness, pale skin, chills and shortness of breath can be signs of anemia in an animal. During peak seasons, a lasting impact towards the animals’ health and happiness can be achieved by avoiding the pet from full infestation from the fleas maybe. Noticeable skin problems such as hair loss, hot spots and rashes can be the signs that one’s pet has flea infestation. This can be caused by the saliva from fleas if the pet suffers from serious allergic reactions. Usually this is a common sign of fleas in any animal.
Black peppered spots on the fur or the skin of the animal can be as a result of flea dirt. A combination of the flea waste and blood that develops as the flea bites and sucks blood out of the pets is the flea dirt. If one passes a moist towel over the flea dirt it will leave a brownish red stain and therefore if a person is not sure whether the spots are flea dirt they can pass a moist towel over it. That an animal is infested with fleas the other sign is excessive chewing and scratching. The saliva that is secreted by fleas causes an itching sensation on the animals skin which results to a lot of scratching. Injuries can be caused on the skin of the animal by scratching hence wounds and also flea allergy dermatitis can be caused and other secondary bacterial infections because of the open wounds.
